Ashley is a 21 year old student who is in his last year at a special unit in a mainstream school.  He is transitioning into part time supported work at the local museum in 2013.

We have been developing his independence in being able to use the public transport system in the hope that he may be able to get to his workplace independently next year.

Communicating ‘More’ with Complex Needs Student

Lynlee Pendrigh, Resource Teacher Vision is engaging Alex, in a favourite song, so that Alex can direct the interaction by communicating ‘more’ by touching Lynlee.

In figure 1 Alex is asking for more.

He can also communicate ‘more’ by turn taking on an instrument as many times as he wants to and by pressing his “Step by Step”, where ‘more’ is spoken.

Alex is a 7 year old homeschooled, complex needs learner with cerebral palsy and cerebral vision impairment. Continue Reading →

Primary student develops daily living skills

Wikitoria is 10 years old and she attends a large primary school in her local area.  She is a 0.1 ORS student on the BLENNZ roll.  In figure 1 Wikitoria is in class.

Wikitoria is working with her BLENNZ Resource Teacher Vision (RTV), Robyn Black to her improve literacy skills.

Specific areas of focus during their weekly sessions include comprehension and following instructions.  As well as learning to follow written instructions Wikitoria is also learning to problem solve and interpret information. Continue Reading →

Regan is 13 and is in year 8 at intermediate school.  She has been recently diagnosed with Stargardt’s Macular Degeneration. For Regan, accessing text is difficult.

Anne Thomas, Resource Teacher Vision introduces us to some technology which allows Regan to independently access what is written on the whiteboard without having to ask her peers or get close to the information. Continue Reading →
